Padabhyanga:
Ayurvedic Foot Massage and Reflexology
This unique treatment involves 3 parts.
1. Firstly, the foot and lower leg is massaged with a combination of effleurage and friction-based movements to help generate better cardiovascular circulation. Organic herb infused sesame oil is used throughout the treatment as it is Tridoshic.
There are 3 doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha, these are patterns in the Ayurvedic tradition used to describe a person’s constitution in terms of physical, emotional and mental characteristics. The use of a tridoshic oil during this treatment helps to rebalance whichever dosha is in excess.
Usually Vata is the predominant dosha in slim people, Pitta tends to relate to an athletic build and Kapha’s predominant body type is a fuller figure.
2. The second part of the treatment involves massage using a Kasa bowl made of copper, zinc and tin. These 3 metals are thought to reduce pain and inflammation, boost the immune system and aid digestion. The bowls are warmed, coated in sesame oil and the round surface is used to massage the foot in circular motions.
3. The final stage of the treatment involves gentle massage of specific marma points in the lower leg and foot. Many of the marmas or pressure points stimulated during the massage are the same as those used in Western reflexology and Japanese shiatsu. Massaging these energy points helps with the elimination of toxins and may improve energy levels.
Tridoshic herbal massage oil from Ayurveda Pura is used throughout the Ayurvedic therapies, it is a beautiful 100% organic oil.
