There’s a long history of ancient civilisations using heated stones to improve health & wellbeing. It was believed that volcanic stones contained their own unique energy helping to “ground the soul and sooth the mind”. The Vulsini basalt stones that I use for hot stone massage are made of volcanic rock. The structure is a fine-grained concentrated mass of minerals and crystals. They contain a high level of iron, magnesium and calcium which gives basalt stone its dark colour. Basalt stones are durable and strong and are perfect for hot stone massage as they very effectively absorb and retain heat. The basalt rock is smooth and shaped into a variety of sizes which can be used to massage the body.
Hot Stone Reflexology
A heated flat stone is placed on the solar plexus chakra point, its gentle warmth is very soothing. The lower legs and feet are massaged with oil to stimulate circulation and then the reflex points and any specific areas of tension are massaged with the heated stones. During the longer treatment there’s also an option to lie on heated stones, the heat helps to relax the muscles of the lower back. Hot stones can also be positioned at each chakra points on the front of the body with crystals placed alongside to enhance a sense of balance of energy at these points. Once all the stones are in place, both feet and lower legs are massaged using the warm stones. Extra attention is given to reflexes on the feet. Massage with the heated stones enables deeper stimulation of all reflex areas and creates a feeling of peaceful relaxation.
All our senses, perceptions, possible states of awareness can be associated with the individual energies of the 7 major chakras. When we feel emotional tension often, we feel it in the relevant chakra. If tension continues over a long period of time physical symptoms may become an issue in the related chakra area.
Chakra energy points are situated on the midline of the body, they align along the spinal column from the tip of the tailbone to the crown of the head. Chakra reflexes are also located on the insteps of the feet from the heel to the top of the big toe. And on the hands from the top of the radius bone in the wrist to the tip of the thumb. Signs of chakra imbalance in the hands & feet would be lack of flexibility or restriction to movement, cold or hot spots, puffiness or areas of tenderness when pressed or massaged.
Chakras associated colour
Chakras ideally work harmoniously together controlling and balancing each other. Homeostasis may become imbalanced in response to over exertion, emotionally charged situations, high level stress, poor diet or not getting enough sleep. Complementary therapies such as reflexology & hot stone massage aim to restore homeostasis relax the body and soothe & calm the mind.
